Private Stormwater System Maintenance

Background
Per Federal mandates under the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System Program, the Department of Ecology administers the Western Washington Phase II Municipal Stormwater Permit for numerous cities in Western Washington including the City of Medina.  Per this permit, the City is responsible for ensuring that property owners are cleaning and maintaining their private stormwater systems.  To be compliant with the permit, the City requires that property owners with a private stormwater system provide annual inspections and maintenance of their facilities performed by City-approved third-party inspectors.

What is a private stormwater system?
Stormwater systems are the infrastructure that capture and transport stormwater runoff before it flows into our streams, lakes and Puget Sound. Private stormwater systems often include features such as stormwater detention tanks, ponds, swales, ditches, pipes, catch basins and sometimes filters.

Maintaining Your Stormwater System - What is Required?
Property owners with private stormwater systems shall have a City-approved third-party inspector review the facility for potential maintenance needs on an annual basis.  Once the inspection is complete, the owner must submit a Stormwater Facility Maintenance Summary Form and required documentation to the City by September of each year.
