SR-520 Lid Maintenance

Update as of June 11, 2026

Update as of June 2, 2026

Dear Medina Community,

The Points Communities just received an email from WSDOT telling us that they will be doing landscape maintenance work this week on all three of the 520 lids and the surrounding areas, which also includes irrigation.  We greet this news as positive reinforcement of the work we are doing with WSDOT to resolve this challenging issue.  Our City Manager is working closely with key WSDOT staff on a long-term resolution to the landscape maintenance issue and we believe that progress is being made.  While there is still plenty of work to do before we have that long-term resolution in place, I do believe that we are on a positive track right now, and I am grateful to WSDOT for taking this action this week.  We will continue to work on resolving this issue once and for all, and will provide another update when there is more news to share with all of you.

To the Medina Community:

We have heard your concerns regarding the condition of the SR 520 lid and share your frustration with the current lack of maintenance.

Over the last several weeks, City leadership has been involved in numerous conversations with state officials on a lid maintenance agreement, as well as issues related to safety and liability. We have also been working with our 48th District Legislative Delegation and are very appreciative of their responsive work on our behalf.  Thank you to all of our residents who have also been in contact with our legislators.  That outreach is very helpful to this situation.

In the coming weeks, we will be engaging in further conversations with WSDOT and other key state officials to resolve these challenging issues – and do so in a way that preserves our community values and establishes clear guidance around responsibility and funding for the maintenance work.

The City remains committed to working with state partners to find a path forward and restore appropriate maintenance of the SR 520 lid. As we enter into this next phase of discussions with state officials, we will keep the community apprised and informed, and encourage residents to stay engaged and share their perspectives with us as we seek a long-term resolution of these issues.
