Public Works Department

Our Public Works Department is responsible for design, construction, maintenance, and management of various public infrastructure and services within the city. Its primary goal is to enhance the quality of life for residents by providing essential services necessary for the functioning of a community. The department is headed by a director who oversees a team of consultant engineers, maintenance workers, and support staff to ensure that public facilities are built and maintained to the highest standards of safety, efficiency, and sustainability. The department also works closely with other government agencies, community organizations, and private contractors to coordinate projects and ensure that public works projects are completed on time and within budget. The Public Works Department also collaborates closely with stakeholders, and community members to identify priorities, allocate resources, and address the evolving needs of the community. It ensures compliance with applicable regulations, safety standards, and environmental considerations in all its activities.

The Public Works Department's responsibilities are quite extensive and diverse even though the City of Medina is relatively small in both size and population. Some common areas of focus include:

Roads and Transportation: The Public Works Department is responsible for the construction, repair, and maintenance of roads, bridges, sidewalks, and other transportation infrastructure. They also oversee traffic management and transportation planning to ensure efficient movement of people and goods. Public Works currently manages 39.6 lane miles of streets, 35,000 lineal feet of sidewalks and two bridges along Overlake Drive East.

Stormwater Systems: Managing the stormwater system and the stormwater permit (NPDES) is another critical responsibility. This includes the construction and maintenance of conveyance systems and compliance with strict regulations required by the Department of Ecology. Public Works manages approximately 50,000 lineal feet of storm pipe, over 1,000 catch basins and two storm retention ponds.

Public Buildings and Facilities: The Public Works department oversees the construction, renovation, and maintenance of city owned buildings, parks, recreational facilities, and other public amenities. The city currently manages:

Environmental Conservation: The city also participates in environmental initiatives, such as preserving natural resources, managing green spaces, and promoting sustainable practices within the community.

Engineering and Design: Public Works consults civil engineers, architects, and other professionals to design and plan infrastructure projects, ensuring compliance with current safety standards and regulations. The city typically budgets for approximately $600,000.00 in Capital Improvements every year.

Emergency Response: During times of weather-related events or emergencies, public works plays a crucial role in responding to and mitigating the impact. They assist with emergency road clearance, and infrastructure repairs.

Permitting and Inspections: The Public Works Department handles right-of-way permitting processes and inspections related to construction projects, ensuring compliance with current standards and regulations.  On average, the department has been processing over 150 right-of-way permits including inspections every year.
